Recently, I’ve had numerous enquiries about the use of cannabidiol, or CBD, for Parkinson’s disease symptoms. So, today, I’ll go into CBD in further detail to help you understand what it is and how it might help with Parkinson’s disease symptoms.

What is CBD?

CBD has been widely investigated in the laboratory and has been demonstrated to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Because nervous system inflammation has been associated to neurodegeneration, it has been postulated that CBD could be advantageous as a neuroprotective agent. Although this is intriguing and possibly exciting information, there are other other compounds with identical capabilities that have been researched in the laboratory but have not resulted in clinical benefit when tested in humans. As a result, clinical trials are required to back up any claims that CBD should be used for medical purposes. Bottom line: Don’t get too worked up until there’s scientific evidence to back it up.

There have been a few CBD studies for various Parkinson’s disease symptoms, but they have mainly involved a small number of patients. Many have been open-label trials, in which both the clinician and the patient are aware that the patient is getting therapy and there is no placebo control group.

Using CBD for treating Parkinson’s

People with Parkinson’s disease are already utilizing CBD in various forms to treat symptoms such as sleeplessness, anxiety, tremor, dystonia, and pain. We don’t know whether CBD is safe and beneficial for a specific ailment without clinical study data, and if it is, what CBD formulation and dosage is appropriate for that symptom.
